The ILCA was founded as the Institute of Legal Cashiers in 1978 by a small group of cashiers working in solicitors' practices who believed there was a need to establish and maintain standards for legal bookkeeping - hence the motto: "Diligentia, Vigilantia" - "diligence and vigilance".

After a vote by the membership in the Spring of 1990, the name was changed to The Institute of Legal Cashiers and Administrators to reflect the growing role of members in both management and law office accounts work. That year also saw the launch of the ILCA's quarterly (now bi-monthly) journal LEGAL ABACUS and the formation of an association with the Institute of Legal Accountants of Ireland.
Membership stands at just under 3,000 and the ILCA has established an excellent working relationship with the Law Society, the Legal Services Commission, local law societies, members of the accountancy profession, major banks, the computer industry and the Press.
The ILCA is governed by an Executive Council of currently 12 members, who are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. In addition, there is a Management Committee formed from members of the Executive Council that reports to the council. The activities of both bodies are reported in LEGAL ABACUS. It must be stressed that member's views are welcomed and encouraged at all times. Indeed, the opinions and experiences of members have already added greatly to the development of the ILCA.
